Make a paper plate koala

Paint a paper plate grey, add two big fuzzy ears and a large black oval nose, and you've got an adorable koala face. Cut eye holes and tape on a stick to turn it into a koala mask, make a handprint koala, or wrap one around a cardboard tube for a quick puppet. Pop your koala on a branch — koalas love to cling to trees!

Aussie animal friends

The koala is a true Australian, right at home with the bouncy kangaroo and the funny platypus. Explore the full animals collection for more.

K is for Koala — but it's not a bear!

Lots of people call it a "koala bear", but the koala isn't a bear at all — it's a marsupial, which means the mum carries her tiny baby (a "joey") in a pouch, a bit like a bear's faraway cousin in looks only! Koalas eat almost nothing but eucalyptus leaves, and they're champion sleepers, snoozing up to 20 hours a day. The koala is also a star of the letter "K".
