Ready for an eruption of fun? These printable volcano templates are a favourite for earth science and STEM. Colour them in, cut them out, assemble them and label the parts to learn how a volcano really works. They're perfect for a science lesson, a school project or a hands-on rainy-day activity. Download and print them for free, then pick a volcano below and print the full-size image.

Make it erupt!

The best part of any volcano project is the eruption. Set your paper volcano up as the backdrop, then make a classic eruption with a spoonful of baking soda and a splash of vinegar to watch it bubble and "explode" with fizzy lava. For an arty version, try "blow painting": drip runny red and orange paint near the top and blow it down the sides through a straw to make lava trails.

The parts of a volcano

Use the templates to explore how a volcano is built. Colour and label the key parts — the magma chamber deep inside, the vent it travels up, the crater at the top and the lava flowing down the sides. Here's a handy science word to share: the hot melted rock is called magma while it's underground, and lava once it bursts out into the open.

A mountain of fire

A volcano is really a special kind of mountain — one that rock can escape through. And a fiery fact to amaze the kids: the biggest volcano in the whole solar system, Olympus Mons on Mars, is nearly three times taller than Mount Everest! For another wild earth-science build, try pairing this with a tornado experiment.
