SuperStencil

Crack the code of an ancient counting system with these printable Roman numeral stencils. They include the symbols the Romans used for numbers — I, V, X, L, C, D and M — ready to colour, trace and cut out. You still see them today on clocks, in movie titles, at the Olympics and the Super Bowl, and carved into old buildings. Download and print them for free, then pick a numeral below and print the full-size image.

Learn the Roman numerals

Each symbol stands for a number: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000. Put them together, reading left to right, and you can write any number. They're a great companion to regular numbers and, since the symbols are really letters, your alphabet too.

Make a Roman numeral clock

Cut out the numerals I to XII and arrange them in a circle to make your own clock face — a fun way to practise telling the time. Here's a curious fact: on many real clocks, the number four is written as IIII instead of IV.

Spell out a special date

Cut out and line up the symbols to write a special year or date — a birthday, an anniversary, or the year something was built — to make a unique sign or keepsake.
